BAM

So earlier this month was looking for interesting podcasts to listen to on iTunes. For the hell of it I searched for “Asian”. Hmmm… what is this ‘Better Asian Man’ podcast??? I started listening to one of William’s podcasts and thought it was awesome what he was saying about Asian American men and dating. I ended up listening to all of the BAM pocasts. After listening to the podcasts, I checked out the ABCs of Attraction website. There was a Day Game workshop the following week so I immediately signed up for it. I’ve never taken any workshops or bootcamps before (with ABCs of Attraction or with anyone else).

Day 1:
I met Andrew at the Westfield San Francisco Center in front of Bloomingdales. We headed upstairs to the lecture room. As we got into the elevator, there were two girls in the elevator saying something about people’s faces. Andrew said, “That’s harsh!” The girls giggled and jokingly scolded him for eves dropping. “Wow, that’s so simple”, I thought. It just woke me up to the fact that you have to be prepared to open a conversation any time, anywhere. Andrew’s a pretty cool guy. He explained that his style is more natural than flashy or gimmicky which I was happy to hear. Then explained the fundamentals of A, B, C, D, E, F. He also went over the type of openers such as Situational, or Direct, or an Opinion.

We started at Union Square just to warm up and talk to people. I think the first day, I was concentrating too much on the structure in my head because my approaches weren’t coming across naturally. I was way too much in my head. We walked to Nordstroms at one point. I approached a girl but my mind went blank and I jumped from A to D! The result was pretty awkward, but it was pretty humorous now that I look back on it. I appreciated Andrew coaching me. “More energy, don’t fidget, fix your posture, smile, kino…”

Day 2:
Before heading out, we went over the indirect openers I was going to use. I also practiced them out loud until it sounded natural. Again, we started at Union Square. Not sure what Night Game is like, but during the day, you had to really pay attention to what other activities were going on. There was a huge Christmas tree that people kept posing in front of. So there were a few times when I almost approached some girls, just to find out they were in the middle of posing in front of the tree for a photo. That would have made an odd picture! There was also a guy in a Grinch costume that people were posing with.

But the good thing was that since it is the Christmas shopping season there were a lot of people around to talk to. Of course, I was still nervous, but things seemed to be better than the previous day. I approached one girl that was outside of Walgreens. I was able to open and transition into my DHV story. It was going ok until her two other friends came out of the store. It just caught me off guard. With a little practice I’ll know what to do next time.

It was good to actually put the ABC’s into action. And the fundamentals of the ABC’s are not only about how to open sets, it’s about becoming a better person. It’s about doing things to improve yourself. Andrew gave me some good suggestions about fashion, exercise, increasing my social circle, and starting new activities. Yes, a lot of this might sound like common sense. But sometimes you just need some good coaches to remind you of that.

Sup Brian,

Sounds like you had some eye opening experiences here at the day game workshop. Remember, it's not a magic pill, we're just here to teach you the fundamentals and especially in the day game workshop, you're scratching the surface. From what it sounds like, you've been taught everything from meeting a girl to getting her phone # and probably some basics for day 2 ideas. Internalizing all those concepts will definitely take some work, but keep plugging away.

Look forward to seeing you on the boards more!

-Kevin
