It depends on a multitude of things, however, let's look at the purpose of a relationship: The purpose is to meet a cool, attractive woman that has the same beliefs, interests, and motivations as you. Is being obsessed with a girl like that a bad thing? No. Not if she's obsessed with you, too. However, it WILL affect the way you behave. In most relationships, that's called PASSION. It's a good thing.
What your buddy is really suggesting is to have options, this reduce your DEPENDENCE on women/sex and allow you to think with your big brain, rather than your small brain.
Do I think you should ALWAYS date more than one girl; of course not. Any kind of ultimatum like that is silly and, by the very definition of what you're saying, you could never be married because you would always be dating more than one girl.
Frankly, if you don't want a woman to have 'too much power over you' then, don't let her. I think your buddy needs to learn to be a man, rather than learning to figure out how to deal with people taking advantage of him.
