Energy intake

What food you eatp Calculate your basic intake, needs, nutritional density via RDA vs how much you're eating and reduce it like I posted it before. 700 calories less for 10 days to lose 1 kilo or 1000 calories less for 7 days to lose 1 kilo.

Energy Expenditure

Cardio = burns up glycogen and immediate energy stores faster so you can kick-start your body into utilizing and burning fat.
Weights = builds muscles to have more muscle stores and hence higher basal metabolism.

Being in the health profession, especially as a learning doctor, I'm pretty much a master of the human body and year 1 is about human homeostasis and function from what I've learned so far, a combination of cardio and weights is optimal to losing weight, fitness, and beautiful body structure as opposed to cardio alone (as you said) or weights alone. But yes, I do understand what you mean about lifting weights and building body mass to increase metabolism.

I highly suggest doing something fun for cardio. If its fun, it isn't a chore anymore so you actually look forward to it. I play dancing games (DDR/ITG) at pretty much a pro level and I am at rock bottom in terms of body fat. I actually feel weird if I don't go to the arcade and play a few times a week.

So if you can join up a sports league, mixed martial arts and/or salsa dancing. Anything that keeps up your heart rate up for a consistent basis. In terms of losing weight, gaining muscle (I'm sure its been covered in this thread already, too lazy to read it all) like if you really want to see results.... INTENSITY and CONSISTENCY is everything. As in if you're not pushing yourself until you're wheezing, aching or puking (lol ok not that extreme) at least 2/3 times a week then you'll get to your destination at a very slow pace (just like pick up!). .

my 2 cents

Thanks for the words of advice. I do need to push myself harder, though how hard I can push myself during exams is a different matter. =).

I'm looking forward to taking up Muay Thai boxing next semester (they're letting in beginners. Coach is hardcore though "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BEGINNER'S COURSE, RUNT. IF YOU WANT A COURSE FOR BEGINNER'S, GO TO THE VILLAGE BRIDGE AND JUMP OFF OF IT.). I've always wanted to do boxing anyway. I've always wanted to learn some form of self defense, plus its intense and hardcore training makes it the fastest the most efficient way to lose weight, get abs and vomit everything you had from lunch (or dinner) because the coach trains you HARD. Flinders has one of the best Muay Thai fighters in all of South Australia... heck, they've even gotten some of them to compete on a national and even world level. I think our coach has also trained a couple of world champions and one came to speak to some of the students. Why he's coaching at Flinders... I don't know.
